Two pieces. Stock certificate and a company prospectus. Cert. #377, issued for 125 shares at New York in 1868. Signed by Wm. Bell as president and Evan Thomas as secretary. The quarry was located in Dutchess County between the towns of Rhinebeck and Clinton, 6 miles east of Rhinebeck and 98 miles from New York City. The company mined roof slate and the quarry had been opened to depth of 60 feet. As they went down, the quality improved. Indications were that the slate bed went to depth of 200-300 feet, the length was 3/4 of a mile and the width from 200 to 600 feet. This was the first quarry of roof slate opened in the United States and dates to 1795. Previously, the quarry had been operated by the New York Slate Company. The demand for the company's slate was very high and they could only fill about half the orders. Both the prospectus and the stock certificate are very ornate and interesting pieces. The prospectus was signed by all the company Trustees including Bell. Both of these pieces are rare.
