Lake Hume, CA & the Hume-Bennett Lumber Co.: 1) Rare photograph of the Hume-Bennett Lumber Mill at Lake Hume, located in the Sequoia National Forest. The Hume-Bennett Lumber Co. was formed in 1905 when Thomas Hume & Ira Bennett purchased the Sanger Lumber Co. in Sanger, CA, which included 22,240 acres of timber, 4 Shay Locomotives & 79 miles of log flumes, used between the mill at Hume and the box factories at Sanger in Fresno Co. The company closed in 1924 due to constant financial losses It was the last logging company to log giant sequoias Photo is 11"h x 38"w, in wood and class frame. 2) Companion piece is 9 x 12" book, with handsome gold cover, entitled "God's Hand Over Hume", a pictorial history of Hume Lake, by Bob Phillips. After the shutdown of the H-B mill, the holdings were sold to the US Government and eventually the land was incorporated into the Sequoia N.F. In 1946, 320 acres of the land was converted into the Hume Lake Christian Camps and serves as a summer camp & conference center for worship and religious studies.
