Issued by the Hungarian Committee of New York to raise money for Hungary's fight for independence from the Austrian Empire dated 2nd February 1852. Signed by Lajos Kossuth former Governor of Hungary who led an unsuccessful Hungarian Revolution in 1848-1849. Kossuth moved to New York to continue to work toward independence. Lithography by Danforth, Bald & Co. with three vignettes. The note promises payment with interest after the establishment of an Independent Hungarian Government. A bust of Kossuth with the inscription "Father of Hungarian Democracy" is in the U.S. Capitol ñ one of only two busts honoring non-Americans. Reverse is blank. 7 1/2 x 4 inches. December 6, 1851, Kossuth arrived in New York City. He gave over 600 speeches around the country and was said to be "a champion of human progress, an eloquent proclaimer of universal freedom. Kossuth left the U.S. with only a fraction of the money he had hoped to earn on his tour, but he left these notes behind.
