O. Henry was the pen name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). An American short story writer known for his surprise endings, his stories put ordinary people in darkly ironic situations. He began his writing career in prison while serving time for bank embezzlement and moved to New York City when released. "The Gift of The Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief," are two of his most famous stories. This rare autograph letter signed "Sidney Porter" is 5 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches, extremely fine condition with hints of toning at the very top. The signature is large and dark. It reads: "4/3 (no year) N. Y. I won't be able to attend your friend's gathering on Saturday evening, owing to the engagements that I mentioned to you. Hope you have a good time. Yours very truly Sydney Porter." William Young was a friend who often joined Porter.
