This memorial speech written at the time of General William Tecumseh Sherman's death in 1891 includes a copy of his hand written letter to the Governor of Louisiana on the18th of January, 1861 proclaiming his loyalty to the Old Government of the United States and that the governor "should take immediate steps to relieve me the moment that the state determines to secede." This would be Sherman's defining moment. This eulogy was presented by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the State of Massachusetts in Memoriam for Companion General William Tecumseh Sherman April 9, 1891. This is four pages of the eulogy speech with two pages of the copy of Sherman's letter to the governor. Accompanying this document are two likenesses of Sherman; one is an etched copper plate of the General in his blues wearing the usual scowl. ( 8 1/2 in. X 11 in. Johnson, Fry & Co. N.Y.) And the other is a National Archived photo 7 1/2 in. X 10 in. series B-1769. Sherman always appeared with this familiar scowl as a lasting reminder of the uselessness of the Civil War. He also planned for a cannon from Fort Sumter to be placed at the entry to the Military School at Louisiana Sate University where he taught; as a reminder to forever stay loyal the United States Government. The cannon is still there. Massachusetts
