Handwritten letter written and sent from the Pine Ridge Reservation by Valentine T. McGillicuddy, a man who accomplished a lot in his lifetime. Valentine Trant McGillycuddy (February 14, 1849 – June 6, 1939) was a surgeon who served with expeditions and United States military forces in the West. He was considered controversial for his efforts to build a sustainable relationship between the United States and Native American peoples. In 1879, he was named agent for the Oglala Sioux and was friends with Chief Crazy Horse, but didn't get along with Chief Red Cloud, was a map maker, explorer, physician, first mayor of Rapid City, South Dakota, president of the South Dakota School of Mines and he was the official observer for the South Dakota governor for the Wounded Knee affair, which many felt could have been averted had McGillicuddy not been relieved of his agent duties.Letter in nice condition.
