Indian Chief by Veloy Joseph Vigil,1931-1997. Carved signature "V Vigil" verso. This is a powerful carving in alabaster of a Chief--he is wearing the headdress and a large carved necklace. Minor surface wear. 15" x 9.5" x 8.25". Veloy Vigil (1931- 1997) was born in Denver, Colorado. Veloy was well known for his painting, but he also enjoyed making sculpture and liked to work on several projects at one time. Vigil was born during the depression in 1931. Eventually, Vigil was able to own his own gallery and produce his artwork full time, and his two sons have followed in his artistic footsteps.
