Large collection of $1 sized counters with American Indian on the obverse. The collection contains approximately 217 different varieties. Only 44 (18%) were made in a manner not resembling US gold coins. This collection is particularly interesting, and begs much more study. It might be suggested that most, if not all of these tokens were not made for gaming. Certainly many were made specifically for jewelry, in the same marketing manner some of the Breen-Gillio gold dollars were made. A number of these are dated: 1854, 1857, 1864, 1865, 1868. Overall, 34 varieties are dated (16%). One variety says "California". There are only ten silver plate or white metal varieties. Only 15 varieties use the phrase "Speil marke". 7 varieties are blank on the reverse, clearly jewelry pieces. Many have holes drilled in the top center for suspension from a bracelet or other jewelry piece. A few have two holes drilled- one on top, and another at bottom, indicating the use as a chain. Several are clearly late-made pieces (post-1900) compared to the early pieces.
