This is an Indian Wars era US Army pistol holster, belt and cartridge pouch. Each piece is historically significant. The belt is black leather with the rectangular "US" solid-brass buckle with an unusual small brass loop containing an original saber hanger with swivel snap. The pattern 1874 holster is clearly marked "Rock Island Arsenal" with the inspector's initials "A.Y" and a small hand-crafted owner's initials "E.H.S." The US inside an oval stamp is clearly visible on the face of the holster. Upon closer inspection of this holster one can see the wear and pressure patterns of the gun carried. It appears that the holster contained a Colt SA Army with the pinched frame sighting plane and 5 1/2 in. barrel. The black leather cartridge pouch with additional interior compartments, sports a 3 1/2 in. brass oval box plate embossed "US" held on by a hand pounded nail. This is a Hagner design pouch but without any wooden bullet separators and never was built for one. This pouch may have been carried in the Indian Wars however it was a surplussed item from the Civil War. Both the holster and pouch utilize sewn leather loops to fit various size belts and for freedom of placement on a specific belt by the owner. Being military issue; these adjustments on the belt are evident by wear in the holes punched for two distinctly different men. All leather pieces suffer various degrees of stiffness and cracking, but everything is present but for a broken strap which held the front flap of the pouch to its brass button, and two small strap attachments out at the very bottom of the pouch. This pouch is made of 17 different pieces of leather. All told, this is an excellent display item from the Indian Wars period in American history. Date: Location: HWAC# 56242
