# 169 for 10 shares to William Cruise. Signed by secretary B. J. Shay and president K. G. Millne(?). Dateline Virginia 1863. Incorporated May (handwritten, unusual?)1863. Not cancelled. 25c Insurance revenue stamp. Vignette of unloading wagon with a sack of gold(?). Rather unique. No printer. Tears along top and left border. Some stain on bottom. Certificate itself has discoloration top left (from old tape mark?). Location "Eliza Waldo Ledge, Virginia Mining District." Notes from local newspapers included. Bartholomew Shay was described as a "professional lot jumper and bully, his hand ever on the butt of his six-shooter." He was an officer in the first miners' union. The union was confrontational and at one point the mine owners all left town for fear for their lives. He shot a man three times and got away with it in Sacramento. He was finally shot in cold blood by a husband that found out he was enjoying the company of his wife. The husband was found not guilty after a sensational trial. Shay's history included.
