This invoice describes a box of gold dust and bars aboard the Steam Ship Panama bound for Boston dated August 31, 1849 with a value of about $35,000. Captain Bailey was given about two weeks to re-provision and return to the isthmus of Panama with this gold; leaving San Francisco on September 2nd. Our document is clearly presented with gold at $16.00 per ounce. With over 2125 oz. of gold in shipment at today's dollars is about $4.5 M. The document is 7.75 in. X 10 in. with folds in very good condition. These were difficult times for California where no formal government existed; an influx of about 3000 people with gold fever arrived every month, and complete crews of sailors and officers abandoned ships in the harbor. As many as two hundred ships lay-at-anchor without a single person on board in the San Francisco harbor late in 1849. The U.S. Navy was also in peril with sailors leaving ships and cavalry in Nevada leaving for the gold hills of California. This was the Power of the Press. The Pacific Mail Line owned the S.S. Panama, where travel to Boston would likely take three months. Sailing the Pacific coast to Panama, overland travel across the isthmus of Panama, and again by steam ship up the Atlantic coast to Boston. Please see photo for details.
