" The Inyo Eagle," Gold Nugget, from "Hell's Half Acre", Inyo Mtns, 16.9g, 1 1/8" across. ).55 troy ozs. Our gold nugget miner, "The Nugget Ace" found this nugget sticking out of the ground in the Inyo range, about 1/2 mile south of the mouth of Mazourka Canyon. The Nugget Acer calls the place "Hell's Half Acre" because it gets so terribly hot there. Mazourka Canyon hosts a number of old mines up the face of the Inyos, all visible from nearby. I found some great artifacts in one of them about 1981, sold long ago (fh).It is shaped like a spread winged eagle, head facing left. At the bottom of Mazourka Canyon were the two small mining camps of San Carlos and Bend City. A number of small mines are found in the area, but none gold. There is a "gold zone" up canyon below Cerro Gordo, which may have been the source of these nuggets, a truly rare locale.
The area where this nugget is found, as well as the prospects and mines around Mazourka Canyon are discussed in detail by California geologist W.A. goodyear in the Eighth Annual Report of the State Geologist, 1888, pp225-309. [ Inyo Mtns California
