1896. Hard to find billhead for the Inyo Marble Works. To the Utica Mining Company for two white slabs. The Inyo Marble Works was created and by 1887 was successfully quarrying and selling sawed blocs. Initially all work on the stone was done locally, but after a while it was realized that it was cheaper to ship the stone over three railroads to Marmol, Nevada for final dressing. The marble was quarried near Keeler and shipped to Mound House on the Carson & Colorado Railroad. There it was transferred to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. At Reno, the marble was unloaded one more time and loaded on the Central Pacific Railroad where it was shipped 8 miles to Marmol. At Marmol the marble was polished and reloaded on the Central Pacific and sent out for sale. Marmol was run by the water of the Truckee River, which was much cheaper than the 100 horse power plant used on the site where the marble was processed.City: San FranciscoCounty: San FranciscoState: CADate:
