This stock has so much going for it. # 1 for 100 shares to William T Coleman. Coleman signs as president. Coleman was leader of the 1856 Vigilance Committee and 1877 Pick-handle Brigade. He was also Borax king of Death Valley before "Borax" Smith took things over. JF Nesbitt signs as secretary. Early 1862 dateline. Outside of a small rip middle left and torn corner upper right, extremely nice condition. Towne & Bacon printer. Incorporated September 30, 1862. William Tell Coleman is a most interesting historical figure. He was the leader of the 1856 Vigilance Committee. This all volunteer citizens committee took it upon themselves to clean up San Francisco. In 1877 he organized a citizen's army to support local authorities to quell anti-Chinese Riots. Known as the 'pick-handle' brigade' because each member carried a pick-handle. During the 1880s Coleman was owner of the Harmony Borax Works in Death Valley, operating famous twenty mule teams to carry the product from 1883 to 1889. The borax works in Death Valley were subsequently acquired by Francis Marion Smith to form the Pacific Coast Borax Company. (Prag Collection)
