Iowa Central Air Line Rail Road Co. , ( known as the Calico Railroad) is an Iowa -operated historic railroad, that operated from Lyons to Council Bluffs, IA being organized in 1853. Money raised to build railroad came from residents buying stock and counties issuing bonds. Work began in 1854. Money raised was not enough to complete line and some money was not used appropriately. Work stopped in June and many not paid. Funds were inadequate. Work was stopped in June and engineers, contractors and laborers, involving some 2,000 persons in all, were left without their pay and without work. The Iowa counties, however, were compelled to redeem their bonds.Some paid with supplies in railroad store. The railroad company had a store at Lyons, and the goods at store (including a supply of calico) were distributed in partial payment to the workers.
