A collection of six Iowa railroad stocks, including Iowa Central Air Line Rail Road Co., a railroad that was planned to operate, but never came to be. Organized in 1853, the railroad was planned to go from Lyons, Iowa to Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was nicknamed the Calico Railroad because Iowa residents who purchased stock and counties that voted bonds to help get it built ended up being partially reimbursed in goods, including calico, from a store in Lyons the railroad company owned, after work was stopped due to inadequate funds. Some of the funds had been misappropriated. "It is a well-known fact that the Air Line Company failed on account of reckless management and open rascality on the part of the President and other officers." (iowajones.org) In all, some 2000 people were left without pay, including engineers, contractors and laborers. The March 1856 certificate is uncanceled but signed by the President S.S. Jones and Geo. W. Bettesworth as secretary. It has two large vignettes of a steam engine and a blacksmith. Other stock certificates include: Des Moines Northern & Western Railroad Co. (2), canceled, c1895 & 1899; Dubuque & Sioux City Rail Road Company (2), canceled, c1876 & 1870; and The Chicago, Fort Madison & Des Moines Railroad Company, canceled, c1899. [ Iowa
