Exceptional 1847 Dahlonega, GA folded letter written by R B Lewis, administrator of the Mint at Dahlonega, and Lumpkin County politician to Senator and former Vice President John C. Calhoun. The letter is regarding an unspecified (gold) settlement between Calhoun and Mr. Milner of Pike County that RB Lewis tried to collect on behalf of Calhoun. Signed R. B. Lewis. Apparently Lewis and Calhoun were partners in a mine with Dahlonega resident George Bedford on gold lot 847. Calhoun was instrumental in the development of the Georgia gold mines. He defied the US Supreme Court and sold off all the Georgia land at auction. The lots titled "Gold Lots" were all in the gold regions, and sold for significant premiums. Calhoun owned the first producing lode gold mine in Georgia, which bears his name today. It is right outside of Dahlonega above a bend on the Chestatee River immediately south of Dahlonega, and can be seen in my book on the Pigeon Roost Scrip of Dahlonega. (fh). This is the only letter I know of in private hands directly involving Calhoun in Dahlonega mining matters.
