Reports of the Superintendent and J. D. Whitney, Esq., United States Geologist and also Letters received from Gentlemen of Experience in the Lake Superior Country. Published in 1854, Wm. C. Bryant & Co. Printers, NY. 14pp. Describes the Fulton copper mine with a cross sectional map of tunnels, adits and shafts. Various independent analyses of the mining property follow including that of J. (Josiah) D. (Dwight) Whitney who later was chief of the California Geological Survey (1860–1874). Whitney became the foremost authority of his day on the economic geology of the U.S. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the continental United States, and the Whitney Glacier, the first confirmed glacier in the United States, on Mount Shasta, were both named after him by members of the Survey. At the end is a listing of 46 other mines in the Lake Superior area and their financial statistics. The amount of copper produced from these mines in aggregate up to 1854 is 14,000 tons valued at $4,620,000. Heavy wear to covers. Pages very good. Please inspect. Key copper mining reference.
