Not listed in the online Token Catalog. J. H. Dewan / Smartsville // GF 10c IT. Good Condition. The Dewan Hotel was originally a two story, L-shaped building. Mrs. Bridget Henderson ran it as a boarding house later selling to Mrs. Ellen Dewan, becoming the Dewan Hotel. Her son, Jim Dewan (our J. H. Dewan) briefly ran Jim's Saloon along the side of the hotel. Smartsville is named for Jim Smart, a local hotel proprietor during the days of the Gold Rush. Extensive placer mining tailings remain throughout the area. A post office was opened at Smartville in 1865. Due to a ruling by the U.S. Post Office Department, Smartsville became Smartville in 1909 State: California City: Smartville HWAC#: 48446 Date: pre-1909
