John Julius LeMoyne built the LeMoyne stone house in Pennsylvania in 1812, where he would go on to raise his son, Francis LeMoyne. Both were outspoken abolitionists and practicing doctors who risked everything to use their home as a stop on the underground railroad. Francis LeMoyne served as a doctor on the front lines of the civil war. He would later go on to invent cremation, building the first crematory on his property after realizing that local cemeteries were contaminating the water supply and making people sick. Today, the LeMoyne House and LeMoyne Crematory still stand. (https://wchspa.org/lemoyne-houses/). This correspondence is in regards to payment owed to J. J. LeMoyne. Includes two notes, each measuring approximately 7.75"x 4.25". Letters are folded and cleanly scored with "x" marks, with one note notarized by the bank. Mild toning present.
