Lot of 9. 1) Rare 1875 pictorial billhead advertising Benton's Pacific Ice Company, which harvested ice from the Carson river. Billed to the Carson Savings Bank for 58 pounds ice. 2) Two other different billheads, one pictorial, advertising Benton's Livery and Stables. 1892 and 1900 (to V& T Railroad). 3) Illustration showing Benton's Livery Stable and Lake Tahoe Stage Office. 8 x 11" 4) 1893 Bullion & Exchange Bank check to Benton, signed on back. 5) c.1900 cut-out newspaper ad for Benton's Liniment, "For Man or Beast." 6) 1886 State Controller's Warrant to Benton for livery service. Signed on reverse. 7) Wood Curtis & Co. receipt for JM Benton. 8) Illustration showing infamous stagecoach driver Hank Monk, who drove the stage for Benton. 4.5 x 8.5" James "Doc" Benton came to Nevada in 1864 after serving as a surgeon in the Civil War. He bought the Stone Stable in 1869. He created his Benton's Liniment first to treat the aches and pains of his horses. In addition to the livery and his liniment, Benton operated the Lake Tahoe Stage Office and the Pacific Ice Company from his livery.
