This muzzleloading 20 gauge shotgun was made by "J.P. Sauer U. Son Suhl" Germany, marked on the center rib between barrels in gold and only partially legible. S/N 14017 on the underside of the barrels and on the forearm. C. 1844-1870. The barrels are a twist patterned Damascus with a hook-breach release held by a wedge on the forearm. This gun is striking for its twist pattern Damascus, fully engraved back-action locks and hammers, straight grip stock with fine-line checkering accented with German silver brads, a spectacular cap box with a gold inlayed stag on the run, and adjustable double triggers. There is an ebony carved and shaped grip that extends the trigger guard. The right lock has a doe at rest inlayed in gold, the left lock has a bobcat on the run in gold as well, and there is a stag at rest in gold on the trigger guard loop. The buttstock is relief carved with two hounds pursuing a wild bore. The cheek rest is outlined in a skip chase pattern that in undeniably German in design and beautiful. The side plates on the stock are German silver and the wedge key is not original to the gun. (Replacements can be found at Track of the Wolf.com or make your own). The ramrod is original to the gun and appears to be of Ebony wood. There is only one ramrod thimble where one is missing and likely had the forward sling swivel attached. A rear sight was dovetailed and is now missing. In overall very good condition. Overall length is 40.75 in. barrels at 24in./ 61 mm with 14 in. LOP. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith.
