This is the second of three papers on the Comstock in 1861 written by J Ross Browne for Harper's Monthly. J Ross Browne's wit was in fine shape. For example, he sizes up the value of the two major cities. Virginia city was mud-hole; had a climate of hurricanes snow, water was a dilution of arsenic, plumbago, and copperas, wood - none at all but sagebrush, no title to properties and no property worth having. Carson City was a mere accident, the occupation of the inhabitants was waylaying strangers bound for Virginia and selling whiskey, it was so dull at that men fall asleep in the middle of the street going from one groggery to another and its products were grass and weeds on the Plaza. Poor condition and not bound any more. Still a great look at the Comstock in the earliest years.
