This is a lot of two books regarding J. Ross Browne, an Irish-born American traveler, artist, writer, and government agent. J. Ross Browne arrived in California during the Gold Rush in 1849, and over the next few decades, he travelled up and down the Pacific Coast in service to the government. His travel included a trip to Crusoe's Island (Juan Feruandez Island), which was enlivened by a mutiny after he was assigned to a post in San Francisco. After this trip, J. Ross Browne wrote Crusoe's Island: A Ramble in the Footsteps of Alexander Selkirk. /with Sketches of Adventure in California and Washoe (436 pages), a book included in this lot. Because J. Ross Browne was widely known for his incredible services to the government, the second book of this lot is a biography by Richard H. Dillon titled J. Ross Browne: Confidential Agent in Old California (218 pages), highlighting more of his successes in the American government. These two books provide interesting insight into J. Ross Browne's career and early America.
