JHS / 100. 1.5". Several cancellation punches. Copper.

The Salt River was named after Indian Trader J.H. Salt who ran the area trading post and is now the home of the Pima & Maricopa Peoples. This is in the area of Parker, near Phoenix. Token is rare. See photos for more details.

The original find was from a metal detectorist in the area named Don Bell - he found around 17 J.H.S. tokens near Parker.

The tokens were thin Brass similar to the S.T. Sutler tokens from Fort Mohave.

We have theorized that the tokens were made out of used cartridge shell casings and cut out in the local blacksmith shop different shapes for 25-50-1.00

Size of J.H.S. tokens do correspond with S.T. Sutler tokens as the earliest known Arizona Trade Tokens in 1870's.

J.H.Salt - Indian trader was the only merchant who matched the initials J.H.S. - so that was the attribution.

The J.H.S. token is the earliest know Indian Trader token assigned to the State of Arizona.
