Lot of 10. James J. Ott was the assayer who discovered in 1859 that the ore being mined on the Comstock Lode was very rich in silver. The first miners on the Comstock were used to gold placer mining in the California Gold Rush. They didn't realize the fortune hidden in the "blue stuff" clogging their mining devices. John F. Stone, a station-keeper on the Carson River, brought a sample to Ott to assay, the first Comstock ore assayed. When it was found to be full of silver, the rush to the Comstock was launched. Ott established the office in 1853 and ran his office until his death in 1907, and his son continued the business until 1955. 1) Wells Fargo cover sent to James G. Ott, Assay Office, Nevada City, Cal. No contents or date. 2-5) Four unused 1860s receipts for gold dust deposits at Ott's assay office. Pictorial. 6) 1888 assay receipt for a 100 lb. quartz rock submitted by Mr. Tilton showing trace gold. Signed by Ott. Stamped "Wilson Collection." 5 x 8.5" 7) Business card for the Nevada Assay Office, Jas. J. Ott. Reverse has ads and a distance & fare table. 2.25 x 4" 8-9) Two later assay receipts, 1924 and 1931, with his son Emil listed as the proprietor. Both for deposits by Roy King. 5.5 x 13" 10) Letterhead for PF Simonds, Ott & Co.'s Assay Office, 1907. A legal letter to Otto Woakle concerning terms of lease/sale of a copper mine signed by three attorneys. P. F. Simonds succeeded James J. Ott before Ott's son Emil J. N. Ott took over his father's assay office. Nice collection that spans the whole history of this important Nevada City assay operation!
