There are two letters from the offices of James Virtue of Baker City, Oregon as well as an invoice to P. Basche for mining supplies. The Virtue Mine is named for James Virtue; banker and broker in gold and silver in Baker City; "dealer in gold dust, gold and silver bars". The mine made three successful runs with proceeds of $2.2 M total. Described as a quartz deposit that ran from 6 inches wide to 12 feet wide at times with a concentration of .5 to 1.0 oz. per ton. Purity defined as .925 fine. Bring that to the surface and see what that looks like! One letter is dated 1873 with J.W. Virtue's signature at the bottom. Please see photos for details.
