In Japanese mythology, the Seven Lucky Gods or Seven Gods of Fortune are believed to grant good luck and often have their place in netsuke engravings or in other representations. This Netsuke represents Jurojin, the god of the elderly and longevity, who enjoys rice and wine and is a cheerful, happy God.
While we believe this piece to be authentic ivory due to the presence of Shreger Lines, and uneven grain, we are not convinced that this piece was not aged artificially. It has the discoloration of a very old piece, with yellow-to orange wear and uneven rub, but not as much wear at the edge of the holes as one might expect from a well used piece. Antique ivory Netsuke, signed and hand carved to represent a mythological God are all characteristics consistent with an Edo Period piece, but there is a possibility this piece is from the mid 1800s and made to look like an older piece specifically for the Western Collector's Marketplace. More research is required to identify or authenticate the signature on this piece, and to more closely determine age. Regardless, this is still a very nice little Japanese ivory piece that we confidently date pre-1891. Approx 35mm x 25mm.
The piece comes from a small private collection passed down as inheritance and then gifted to the consignor, who kept the pieces boxed in the closet for many years. HWAC provides an accurate and complete description of all lots, as well as high resolution images online. We do not guarantee authenticity for Netsuke so Live Preview is available 2-3 days prior to the auction or by appointment and recommended prior to bidding.
