Each of these pieces have traditional netsuke holes and what appears to be Schreger lines, indicative of ivory. All are signed in Japanese on the bottom and have signs of hand carving tool marks. The child eating corn has a piece chipped off his foot and a thin line across the bottom that runs in a center line up his back to his collar, that appears to be a crack and not a seam. The figure holding the fan is flatter in form than the others and has a mark on the bottom that may not be a signature, that resembles " - N -" or possibly a 2? He is 55mm x 30mm x 10mm. The other bearded man is approx 48mm x 25mm and the boy is 35mm x 30mm. Authenticity and age of these three pieces is not definitive, although they appear to us to be authentic ivory from the Meiji period (1868-1912)made as collectibles, as they lack the rub and signs of wear characteristic of the Netsuke made for actual use in the 1600s to early 1800s. They lack an import mark required post 1891 and are hand-carved with nice detail and skillful craftsmanship. We found comparable pieces to these ranging in price from under $100 to nearly $700.
