Lot of 11 pieces of souvenir "Japanese" Netsuke and other items. 7 pieces are vintage faux ivory reproductions or imitations, made to look like aged Japanese ivory netsuke with two holes for a tie or cord. We believe these pieces are made of resin or plastic, possibly a few are bone, as they are slightly heavier and appear to be hand carved and artificially ages. All are in clever Japanese cultural figures, except for one that is a goose. 5/7 pieces are signed, a practice done even on imitations or repros to make them look more valuable to Westerners. These 7 pieces are most likely c1868-1891 reproductions, still highly collectible. Lot also includes a small white resin or plastic bead of the three monkeys - Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil, a larger hole-less piece (2.5" tall) known as "Okimono" or object of display. Okimonos were made as ornamental carvings for the tokonoma, a decorative alcove that is a vital part of a Japanese home and is used for the display of paintings, pottery, art, and flower arrangements. This one appears to be made of resin or bone and is artificially aged and unmarked. Also included in lot is a cast metal piece, possibly a copper alloy, stamped "JAPAN, indicating is was manufactured post 1921, also of the three monkeys, as well as a small, green floral piece with mold lines made out of a green resin meant to look like jade, with a piece broken from the top. Pieces measure between .5 inches and 2.5"
Please carefully and inspect all high resolution images.
Japanese artifacts/antiquities are a favorite for reproduction and due to the volume of counterfeiting techniques and the level of skill employed by knock off artists, all interested buyers are encouraged to make their own inspection prior to bidding.
HWAC does not guarantee authenticity and has provided an accurate and full description to the best of our ability. Every item we sell is available for live preview 2-3 days prior to the auction or by appointment.
