A collection of 8 postcards, 7 from the MS Asama Maru, 1 from the Terukuni Maru, two ocean liners built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Nagasaki, Japan, and owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisha. They first launched in 1928 & 29, respectively. The Asama Maru built for the trans-Pacific Orient-California fortnightly service and she was characterized as "The Queen of the Sea." She served during WWII, and eventually met its fate when it was hit by four torpedoes on Nov. 1, 1944, in the Bashi Channel by the submarine USS Atule. Of the 1,874 crew and military personnel on board, 474 were lost in the sinking. The Terukuni Maru sank off the English coast in 1939 after striking a German mine. Her sinking has been described as Japan's only World War II casualty outside East Asia before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The 27 passengers and 178 crew were all saved. Post cards are interior lithographs of the ships. 3 duplicates. All unused. [Japan]
