A major archive of five letterpress books and two business ledgers from James B. Leahy of Butte (City), 1886-1893. Leahy was sole proprietor of the Real Estate Mining and Commission Company. From his newspaper advertisements in the Butte papers, it appears Leahy was one of the key mining stock promoters in the region. Leahy was the key promoter for such key mines as the Original Butte, Moulton, Alice, Black Pine, Flint Creek, Montana Fire Clay, Granite Mountain, West Granite, Tuscarora (in Argenta, Beaverhead Co.). His business was so successful that he opened office in the summer of 1890 in Spokane and Boise.
These letterbooks are remarkable, clearly showing how, when, where and why he promoted the various mines. There is mention in letters of his meetings with Wm. A. Clark, Marcus Daly and others. One of his later ventures, the Montana Fire Clay Co., was particularly important to Clark, and the company pushed hard for production, as their sales agents outsold the company's ability to mine the clay.
This group is particularly important, as it opens a window into Stuart Mackenzie's collecting life. Many of the major stock certificate finds of his are the very company's that Leahy promoted. Did Mackenzie get into an original archive of Leahy, complete with all the stocks? maybe. He has many of the records for the Alice MC (another lot in the sale), among others.
Unfortunately for researchers, no obituary was found, and he missed US census takers.
This may be the best original record set of a Montana mining promoter of key mines extant.
