Large Jicarilla Apache Basket with Mercury Dime centerpiece. This basket may have been used as a drum by the Southern Paiute people in their bear dance ceremonies. Circa 1900. 6" height x 16.5" width x 6" base. On a three stick foundation. Background is made with split willows, and the design is made with faded red aniline dyed willow or sumac. The design is made with diagonal step pattern and is finished with a braided rim. This basket is in fair condition with no stitches missing. Attributed by ND.
