Small collection of personal papers from the John Dement trunk, conserved by the Northeast Document Conservation Service in Andover. This collection includes a number of paper scraps, some matching in size (2 x 2" square) with no discernable printing. One cover is addressed to a person in Washington (no contents). A leather covered bankbook-style pocket booklet (ledger) is present with only one pencil notation: "385 B Way" (no information found on this); an unused Wells Fargo franked envelope with imprinted US postage. The latter item is especially important in the context of the usage of Wells Fargo in the mails during the California Gold Rush, here by a man who traveled the California and Oregon gold regions and was part owner of a store in Oregon City. This is the best by far of the two Wells Fargo covers recovered and conserved from the SS Central America, the other being only a partial cover.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
