John Selman is mostly known for the murder of John Wesley Hardin in August of 1895. He was acquitted by a hung jury when he explained that Hardin saw Selman's reflection in the mirror and attempted to draw first. We have a court document with his autograph as "constable" dated 1893. There is a Capias (Warrant) for the arrest of John Selman of Shackleford County, Texas in 1880. Bond was set at $9000. Only three years earlier Selman along with County Sheriff John Larn were hide inspectors battling cattle rustlers. The warrant is for the "theft of one cattle". Clearly, there was a fine line of which side of the law you were on. This document is signed by J. M. Masterson clerk for the district court and by Sergeant L. B. Carnxxxx(illegible) Sergeant of Co. "C" Frontier Battalion of the Texas Rangers.
