9 John Till, The Plaster Doctor, RPC's. "It turns out that Till was a charlatan first class. Known as the famous plaster healer of Northern Wisconsin, John Till was born in Austria in 1870, immigrating to Canada at age 28. With no formal medical training, Till’s qualifications included stints as a blacksmith and a lumber jack. It seems an interest in folk remedies led him to treat a Mrs. Octave Cloutier of Somerset, Wisconsin. He covered her infected cheek with a mysterious medicine of his own making, and overnight she was cured. His medical career took off. Sensing a good deal, he left his job in a nearby lumber camp, and set up shop at Cloutier’s farm. Information from the Washington County, Minnesota Historical Society reports, “Till practiced his healing art in Hudson, New Richmond, Somerset, and Turtle Lake, Wisconsin during the first two decades of the 1900s. Patients who numbered in the hundreds would wait outside his clinic and be called in twelve at a time. Till quickly diagnosed each by placing his fingers on the patient’s jugular veins. From there he could tell their problem." from eu.sheboyganpress.com [Wisconsin]
