Self identified "James Wilcox, Apr, 1, 1860". Postmark is good. R-4, YUB-710, 1855-1863. [Williams]. Stamped envelope wot Three Cent Washington. Sent to Jeff Wilcox, Sacramento. Letter is from Stovall & Wilcox asking Mr. Wilcox to send down enough sacks to handle the wool for 1,100 sheep! Rancho Johnson (or Johnson's Ranch) was a 22,197-acre Mexican land grant in present-day Yuba County, California, given in 1844 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Pablo Gutiérrez. It is famous as the place where seven weary survivors of the Donner Party walked to to seek help for the members of the party stills tuck on the pass.
