This is a reproduction of the famous early painting "The South Atlantic" by Josef M. Arentz, made in 1943 by Publisher David Ashley of New York, who reproduced several of Arentz's marine paintings. It is registered with the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 4. 1943 New Series, Volume 38, No.1 as Reproduction of a Work of Art.
Josef M. Arentz was born in 1903 in Odendorf, Germany and died in 1969.
A letter written by Josef Arentz printed in the Summer 1952 issue of "The Pine Cone" published by the State of Maine Publicity Bureau references the reproductions of David Ashley. In the same letter Arentz beautifully sums up his perspective on his art and life with a quote; "Thoughts are like the Ocean: its heart beating endlessly. There may be stormy or peaceful swells, but they are always there." Measures approximately 37" x 31" in heavy wood frame, painted gold. Label on reverse with title and artist name.
