This is the model 1855 Joslyn carbine known as the "monkey tail" carbine. The condition of this gun is fair with the ring on the receiver missing as well as the front sight. The receiver lever can not be opened. The model 1855 is rarely seen today, and this gun wears 160 years of handling marks. There is a paper tag on the right side of the stock that reads: "Carbine 1855 model (illegible) used by Clell Miller one of Capt. W. Quantrill (illegible) of (illegible) during (illegible)". McClelland "Clell" Miller rode with Quantrill's Raiders at the age of 14 years. He was wounded on October 26, 1864 the same day as his leader "Bloody Bill" Anderson and 10 others were killed. Clell would be killed later on September 7, 1876 while robbing the Northfield Bank, in Minnesota with the James gang. (reference: penningtons.tripod.com/roster). The provenance of this gun cannot be confirmed. No attempt has been made to fire this firearm to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired with the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm.
