Issued 1877 Julia Cons. Mining stock. A key Comstock mine. Signed by secretary A Noel and president Thomas Cole datelined San Francisco 1877. Incorporated August 1875. Contemplative lady vignette. Britton, Rey & Co. printer. On August 16, 1877 The Julia Consolidate had a two column article in the Virginia Evening Chronicle. It seems the company spent $330,000 last year from assessments and wanted another $110,000 this year. The Chronicle has been for the last several days trying to determine what the daily cost is of running the mine. They believe labor cost is $156 a day. Add to that superintendent salary, wood, water, mules, powder, supplies etc. and the cost should only come out to $95,000 for the year. Several ex-employees say superintendent Thayer used Julia mine funds for outside expenses. In August of 1878 the Julia connected to the Sutro Tunnel. The Julia, Ward and Bullion were talking consolidation in 1880. There was a well loved prostitute in Virginia city named Julia Bulette. Any connection? Horizontal and vertical creases, 16 assessment hand stamps on verso, upper left dog ear. Virginia City Nevada Herzog Collection
