Placer County, California (printed to the left of vignette). Inc. in New York. No. 48, issued for 50 shares to R.C. Jackson on April 21st, 1880. Signed by president J. Augustus Johnson and secretary Thos. R. White. Jr. Not cancelled. Black border and print, underground mining vignette. Printed by Franklin Bank Note Co., NY. 7 x 10.75" Pinholes, heavy folds. Not in Filer or other Holabird indexes. Likely named after Julian in San Diego County. Previously Inc in 1872. Length of Vein: 2500 feet. Location: One mile from the C. P. R. R. Station at Newcastle, and 113 miles from San Francisco, via Vallejo, in the semi-foot hills, and on the main gold bearing belt extending in a southerly direction from Nevada to Mariposa county. Lode is from 3 to 8 feet ; average thickness, 3 feet 6 inches. "The mine was located in 1859 ; has been worked.. with a rude five-stamp mill and imperfect amalgamation, the ore yielding from $8 to $20 per ton. Recent and thorough mill tests assure an average value of $12 50 per ton. Present Developments:From the first or fifty foot level, workings have been extended 1,064 feet. The second or 150 foot level has been driven northerly and southerly 520 feet. Down to this level, three shafts have been sunk, and a fourth will soon be completed, thus affording thorough ventilation and great facilities for the cheap extraction of large quantities of'ore. The main shaft is now down 330 feet, and drifts commenced northerly and southerly on the lode. The developments in depth give assurance of greatly increased values in quality of ores upon further prosecution of the work. By tunnels and levels, the vein is proved to the extent of 1,100 feet ; and inclusive of shafts, 1,920 feet in length. Mill— A first class twenty-stamp Mill, with all modern improvements and appliances for saving gold, is now under contract, and will be immediately erected. Its crushing capacity will exceed 1,000 tons per month." [Ref: The California Mail Bag, 1872]
