Very rare Justh & Hunter gold ingot face plate from the 1857 SS Central America wreck. The original ingot number was 4293, 887 fine, 108.6 ounces. Less than 18 of these bars were melted to make the California private gold coin restrike of the $10 Horseman. The Justh & Hunter face plates are so rare that there are no comparable sales in recent times. Justh & Hunter ingots were first found onboard the salvaged wreck of the SS Central America, which sank in the fall of 1857 off the coast of Virginia. While a number of these gold ingots were found in varying sizes, few trade today because of their rarity. The firm lasted just a short period of time, rendering this ingot a rare snippet of the 1857-8 period. The net weight of this ingot is 10.07 troy ozs. Date: 1857 ID# 38131
