This is 7.5"x 11" piece of black shale contains the fossil imprint of a Keichousaurus, a marine reptile from the Triassic/Jurassic period.
First discovered in 1957 in China, this particular specimen appears to be from Europe, indicated by the smaller ulna that is not the case for the China discoveries.
This piece has a few calcite veins running through it and the image is very sharp.
Keichousaurus like all sauropterygians was highly adapted to the water. They ranged in size from 15 cm to 30 cm. They were fish eaters and some of them even inhabited marshes.
This is a great collector piece and a rare find. This is the real thing, not a prefabricated reproduction from a gift shop.
