Kellogg & Humbert gold ingot face plate. 1857 SS Central America wreck. The original ingot was serial number 997, 884 fine and 147.56 ozs. These face plates were made from about 60 melted Kellogg & Humbert gold ingots used to make the restrike of the Humbert $50 slug commemorative. These are highly collectible because of their fabulous association with the Gold Rush treasure ship SS Central America. This piece is x-Rush for Gold, p234. The Kellogg & Humbert ingots were unknown until the salvage of the treasure ship SS Central America. More than 300 Kellogg & Humbert were found on the ocean floor about 8,000 feet deep off the coast of Virginia. They ranged in size from less than ten ounces to several hundred ounces. The smaller bars are logo punched on the sides. The few with cut face plates have the full face representation of the classic ingot marking system, starting with the serial number at the top, then the assayer name, then ounces, fineness and finally the dollar value at the bottom. This was custom regularly followed by the assayer industry, though there are exceptions. Choice, encased in thick plastic for protection, removable back. Net weight: 9.31 troy ozs. These ingot face plates are a true American treasure. Date: 1857 ID# 38132
