Rare pictorial billhead for the Pioneer Soda Works, J. Kelly and Hugh Kelly, Importers & Dealers in Wines & Liquors, Virginia, Nev., Sept. 1st, 1875. Billed to the North Con. Va. Mining Company for "1 empty package." Mysterious. Folds, punch holes on left side. James Kelly was partners with Owen Casey in Sacramento during the Gold Rush before they headed to the Comstock in the early 1860s. They set up their Pioneer Soda Works in Virginia City in 1862/63. Casey left and Kelly stayed to operate the business for at least a decade. John Piper (of Piper's Opera House) was also once involved in this soda works. Kelly eventually returned to Sacramento, probably in 1875 after the fire. There are no known embossed soda bottles from the Virginia City operation. They probably used the Sacramento bottles.
