Kennett was the most important copper mining town outside of Redding & Shasta in the late 19th century. The end of World War I brought a depression to the town which ultimately closed the Mammoth mine in 1923. Kennett disincorporated in 1931. What remained of the town and smelter was flooded by Shasta Lake while Shasta Dam was being constructed from 1935 - 1945. Kennett has since been submerged under approximately 400 ft. of water (depending on the lake level).
