Full stack, beautiful silver inlaid Kentucky long rifle with 42 inch barrel and 56 inch overall length. The long rifle, also known as longrifle, Kentucky rifle, or Pennsylvania rifle, was one of the first commonly used rifles for hunting and warfare. It is characterized by an unusually long barrel, which is widely believed to be a largely unique development of American rifles that was uncommon in European rifles of the same period. The longrifle is an early example of a firearm using rifling, spiral grooves in the bore. This gave the projectile, commonly a round lead ball, a spiraling motion, increasing the stability of the trajectory. A more stable trajectory meant dramatically improved accuracy over the more commonly available smooth bore muskets also used in the period. Rifled firearms saw their first major combat usage in the American colonies during the Seven Years War, and later the American Revolution in the eighteenth century. Lock plate marked “Norion Jewett” to “I Busby” originally a flintlock converted to percussion, would be a good research project to find out who the presenter and receiver were. (8) eight pointed silver stars on both sides of stock 48 beautiful silver engraved inlays, double set triggers. Beautiful Patch Box. Barrel stamped “M. Lloyd” 45 caliber, 7 lands and grooves. The American longrifle began to evolve from the European forms during the second quarter of the 18th century along the Pennsylvania frontier, in and about Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A very historic and artistically beautiful piece of Americana. Note: Black powder antique.
