Cert. #182, $1,000, 5%, First Mortgage Gold Bond issued in 1892. Great vignette of a group of miners outside the mountain mine portal, two surveyors out front, an ore car and the railroad tracks. Signed by J.B. Metcalf as president and Thomas F. Ryan as secretary. Thomas Fortune Ryan was a U.S. tobacco and transport magnate. Ryan was perhaps the greatest benefactor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond in the decades before the Great Depression as he helped pay for the construction of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, Virginia (wiki).The bond was due in 1907. The company was incorporated in New Jersey. The bond has red borders and background on large white paper. The total issue was $750,000. The New York and Kentucky Land Company was the predecessor of this company. Thirty coupons attached at the right. Uncancelled.
