A wonderful piece of Early American history. This rifle has what looks to be a replaced Joseph Golcher Lock plate and trigger /hammer assembly. This Pennsylvania style rifle stock configuration most likely started life as a Flintlock rifle dating back to possibly the American Revolution of the late 1700s. But as time and technology evolved, especially in firearm technology, Flintlock technology gave way to the percussion era and many already existing flintlock rifles and pistols were easily converted to a percussion gun simply by changing the lock plate which were made and sold by the Golcher company. Many gunsmiths and gun makers would concentrate on manufacturing firearms and would buy the already readily made lock plates from Golcher and other lock makers. This could also be converted by the owners themselves as this piece looks to have been, of the period, owner converted, as there are two square nails used to shore up the lock plate at the front of the lock plate. There is evidence of some very old repairs to this fine piece of history. This is a 45 caliber, light weight, Pennsylvania style rifle as is evidenced by the unusual curvature of the stock and cheekpiece. This looks to be made of one piece of dark walnut or possibly stained maple but most likely it is made of two or more and meant to look like one. Barrel bore looks good. Both front and rear sight are original and intact, ramrod looks to be original and fits well. The action need a bit of work but is intact. Overall length 53,” barrel length 37.” Overall a very nice piece of American Heritage. Antique. City: State: Date: ID# 38107
