This Kentucky Rifle was built by Alfred Harden of New Plymouth Township, Vinton County Ohio. Alfred was born in 1828 and his date of death is unknown as he moved west after the Civil War. [Huster,Shumway 1973]. This rifle is a .030 caliber built between 1850-1860. The stock is tiger stripe maple with an original patch box of brass. The patch box lid is secured by an internal spring clip and contains original linen patch material heavily oiled and now firm. The wrist area has, of the period, a brass wrap repair. The lock is sand cast engraved and warranted to a hardware store locksmith Schutte of Chilcothe, Dayton Ohio. The barrel is finely polished with the gunsmith’s chicken walk design around the rear sight for decoration; it is faint but still visible. Double set triggers. The lock needs minor work. Overall a very nice piece of antique Americana that would make a great display for a gun room or a nice addition to a Kentucky rifle collection. City: State: Date: ID# 38104
